A Housing First approach designed for veterans who have been hardest to reach — built on trust, not compliance.
Our Safe Haven provides a housing environment that is safe, sanitary, flexible, and stable. With 37 beds for both men and women, our small-facility setting is designed to re-establish trust and re-engage residents in treatment services and permanent housing options.
Alabama Veteran Safe Haven operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as an early recovery model. We serve hard-to-reach veterans with severe mental illness and/or substance use problems who have been unable or unwilling to participate in traditional services.
Consistent with Housing First principles, our program does not require sobriety or full compliance with treatment for admission or continued stay. We meet veterans where they are — no conditions, no judgments, no turning anyone away.
Our approach is designed for veterans who have experienced repeated failure with traditional programs. We provide a non-intrusive environment that prioritizes rebuilding trust before treatment — the foundation for lasting recovery.
For veterans whose needs extend beyond transitional housing, our Long-Term Care Placement Program coordinates placement into skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and memory care — working directly with the VA so no veteran navigates that process alone.
Veterans who successfully transition out of our program may qualify for safe, affordable rental housing in the Old Cloverdale area. Rent includes utilities. Veterans are responsible for their own living expenses, building the independence that lasting stability requires.
The Low Demand model was developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs specifically for veterans who cannot or will not engage with traditional programs. Alabama Veteran Safe Haven fully embraces and operates under these VA-recognized core values.
